This small town is home to Poroto Kotan, a reconstructed Ainu village, which may make for a nice stop. There is also the Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park, a national museum whose mission is to promote an understanding and awareness of the history and culture of the Ainu people. Much of the area is covered in forest and its proximity to Shikotsu-Tōya National Park makes it an interesting stop, provided you have time to spare. Shiraoi is located on the JR Muroran line, between Noboribetsu Onsen (30 min) and Tomakomai (25 min). You can also get there by bus from Sapporo (2h).
