Sapporo is the fifth largest city in Japan with 1,950,000 inhabitants, and concentrates one third of the population of Hokkaidō. The island's capital, Sapporo is also a city known for its eponymous beer. It is a pleasant, green and active city. It was built in 1869 in a checkerboard pattern also reminiscent of ancient Chinese capitals, and is unlike any other major Japanese city. It became a prefecture in 1886. Sapporo developed in the western center of the island in the plain of Ishikari, limited in the north by the bay of Ishikari, and in the south by the mountainous chain where culminate the mounts Eniwa and Yōtei. A very dynamic and modern city, it is an almost obligatory stop for travelers visiting the island and deserves a visit.
