It is not known whether the temple was founded by Kenkei or by Kūkai, but the connection between this temple and the Shingon-Shū sect, of the Buzan branch, is certain. The temple was founded in 681, 25 km southwest of Nara. The temple is also said to have been rebuilt by Kūkai in 824. The five-story pagoda (Gojūnotō) is beautifully preserved. The kon-dō buildings and the miraku-dō both date from the ninth century, making them the oldest structures in the place. The hon-dō dates from the 13th century and houses a statue of Nyorin Kannon.
