RYOTAN-JI
Ryotan-ji Temple was renovated in 1601 when Naosuke II, the first lord of Hikone Castle, moved to the area. Priests, who were studying Zen landscape art, came in great numbers to visit this temple. The temple is famous for its beautiful garden, Fudaraku, which is made of white sand and 48 stones. There are also 56 remarkable paintings on fusuma, the opaque sliding screens that serve as doors in traditional Japanese homes. The main hall of the temple contains beautiful ink paintings by Kyoryoku Morikawa, a student of Matuso Basho.
