MII-DERA TEMPLE
Also known as Onjō-ji, this temple was founded in 674 and is the main temple of the Tendaijimon Buddhist sect. It owes its name to the three springs that served as baths for the emperors Tenchi and Temmu and the empress Jitō. It consists of many buildings, including the Kondo, a national treasury. The monks of the temple were in conflict with those of the Enryaku-ji temple on Mount Hiei. Today it has become a popular place for film shoots, including the recent adaptation of the animated film Kenshin the Wanderer.
