Dayton is one of Nevada's oldest communities, and in the last century was an important supply port for surrounding towns. With a population of 15,000, the city lays claim to the title of oldest settlement in Nevada. A title that Genoa is contesting. Since the 1990s, Dayton has experienced strong growth thanks to residential development on the east bank of the Carson River. The historic part is in the Comstock Historic District, with a small but impressive main street. Odeon Hall is a small museum housed in an 1865 schoolhouse, the oldest in Nevada in its original location.
