SANTA MARIA DE IDRIS E SAN GIOVANNI DI MONTERRONE
Rock churches with various frescoes and beautiful views in Matera.
The rocky outcrop overlooking the Sasso Caveoso is one of the most famous views of Matera. It is pierced by two rock churches that communicate with each other through a gallery. You enter through the church of Santa Maria de Idris, which dates back to the 14th century and has several frescoes, including a Conversion of Saint Eustace, the patron saint of Matera. The church of San Giovanni in Monterrone is older and its frescoes date from the 12th to the 14th century.
