The canyon of the Tara River is one of the most prestigious natural sites of the Balkan Peninsula.Accessible by car on a small portion only, it is classified in the "top 10" of canyons in Europe. Protected by Unesco since 1977, it is characterized by vertiginous walls culminating, between Veliki Štuoc (2,104 m) and Obzir (1,868 m), at 1,300 m high. Punctuated with caves and waterfalls, these walls are steep and difficult to access, which preserves the beauty of the site. Refuge of a flora and a fauna of an exceptional diversity, the river of Tara extends on more than 140 km, the longest of the country. If a road runs along part of the canyon, the best way to discover it is still by water, the last 30 km of the canyon to the Bosnian border being not accessible otherwise. Agencies specialized in outdoor sports offer tourists to descend all or part of the Tara River in inflatable boats or even wooden rafts. If some parts of the river are cut by rapids and whirlpools (the canyon has about fifty of them), the descent of the canyon is rather quiet. You don't need to be a rafting pro to embark on this adventure! The descents are however more extreme in May and June, and quiet in summer. The activity takes place from April to October.
