Situated on a conical hill above Lake Skadar, close to where the Morača River flows into the lake, this medieval fortress-town was founded in the 11th century on Roman foundations before becoming, in the 15th century, the capital of the first state of the South Slavs (Zeta), ruled by Stefan and then Ivan Crnojević until 1478. Pursued by the Turks, the latter abandoned the town to seek refuge a few kilometers further on, on the edge of the lake, in Rijeka Crnojevića, then later on the site of the present-day town of Cetinje.
