38 km north of Neiva, Villavieja is the gateway to the Tatacoa Desert. Tuk-tuks leave from the main square to the different tourist sites. The village itself, founded in 1550, has preserved a certain colonial style, as evidenced by La Casona, in the central square, where Simón Bolívar stayed. The Paleontological Museum located in the Casa de la Cultura is worth a visit. Villavieja is easily reached from the Neiva terminal. Buses run every half hour until 6 pm. It takes about an hour to get there. Bring cash, the ATM in the town square does not always accept international cards.
