About 140 km south of Cartagena, Santiago de Tolú is a fishing village appreciated for its peaceful atmosphere and beaches. The aging hotel services have developed mainly to accommodate Colombians during school vacations and public vacations. For the foreign traveler, who often prefers Rincón del Mar, Tolú is mostly a base for reaching San Bernardo, an archipelago comparable to Rosario near Cartagena. For about $80,000 per person, you can contract the services of a local agency that will take you and a group for a full day(pasadía) to the nearby islands. Between the villages of Tolú and Coveñas (another tourist village, more modern and concrete), don't miss the Ciénaga de la Caimanera, 1,800 hectares of dense mangrove swamp with a rich and varied fauna.
