290 000 inhabitants. A large port located at the mouth of the Dnieper River, on the Black Sea, Kherson was founded only in 1778, under the order of Catherine II, before becoming at the time, the political and economic centre of the region named Novorossia, "New Russia." He had previously been inhabited by the Scythians, Sarmatians and Slavic tribes. In the th century, the territory had been invaded by Crimean Tatars. But the Cossacks were not far away and they settled there, while Turks and Tatars were invaded out of the territory. In 1774, the region moved to Russia. During the th century, the Germans contributed to the beautification of the city. Today, Kherson is considered one of the greenest cities in Ukraine. The city itself is not of particular interest, however, it is a good starting point for visiting the surrounding area of Askaniya Nova, one of the country's first and largest natural parks.
