Located on the right bank of the river Dnieper, on a cliff overlooking the river, the town of Kaniv offers a picturesque landscape. It interests two audiences for very different reasons: Ukrainian nationalists, romantic and sentimentalistes on the one hand, because the great Shevchenko poet is founded. Students and researchers in the natural sciences on the other side, because there is a wonderful natural reserve. For those who do not recognize themselves in these categories, the town of Kaniv offers a relaxing stage in the Ukrainian nature of the banks of the Dnieper. Created in the th century, to host a fortress of Kiévienne Rus, Kaniv is above all an important place for Ukrainian national feeling. Non-Ukrainians can hardly understand the love and veneration that the inhabitants of the country bring to Tarass Shevchenko. Therefore, the fact that he chose this city to be buried justifies that it has become a high tourist place. Indeed, fell in love with the city in 1845, the writer asked to have it buried. It is now based on Mount Tarass (Tarassova Hora) which bears its name. The Shevchenko tomb has become a symbolically strong place for Ukrainian nationalists and many intellectuals, who have designated it as a meeting and discussion place, already before the revolution, and then during the khrouchtchévienne period.
