A long time ago the capital of a divided country, then provincial capital of the Soviets Empire, Kiev remained in the shadows. Ukraine's independence in 1991 transformed the city. Kiev has returned to a great capital, open, festive, proud of its history and resolutely oriented towards Europe that all Kiéviens, a strain or new newcomers, want to devour full teeth. The first emotion will come from the churches, Hagia Sophia, a copy of Hagia Sophia de Constantinople, with its gigantic dome covered with golden mosaics. And the Laure of Petchersk, with its caves in which one into a little candle, to admire the remains of the saints preserved for almost ten centuries. The second emotion will come from the Khreshchatyk, the Champs-Elysées in Kiev, with its restaurants, cafes, discos and the Podil district, where the characters of Bulgakov's or Kourkov's novels are never far away. If the city is a real happiness for lovers of beautiful churches and lively streets, some areas of the centre also reserve islands of freshness and greenery where it is good to walk.
