The settlement of the city dates back to an expedition from Montevideo in 1783, which included 52 Spanish families and 200 natives. The settlers were mostly from Asturias in Spain and from a region of León called Maragatería. This is why the inhabitants are now called Maragatos. According to legend, San José was the starting point for the famous exodus of the Pueblo Oriental, led by Artigas, which culminated in the Treinta y Tres Orientales crusade in 1825. The city then temporarily became the capital of the Provincia Cisplatina, when Uruguay was annexed by Brazil. There are about 40,000 inhabitants today.
