Sanctuary sheltering sea lions on the sand: visit of the colony with a powerful smell, due to the corpses of some animals.
This colony is the best known of the 16 fur seal colonies in Namibia. The sanctuary can accommodate up to 210,000 sea lions in November and December! The length of the visit will only depend on the weather and the tolerance of each one to the powerful smell of the colony whose corpses of some members litter the ground (sensitive souls abstain). However, observing the behaviour of the sea lions both on the sand and in the water will quickly make you forget this inconvenience. The site is also marked by the famous cross which gives it its name.

Gigantesque colonie d'otaries à fourrure. Des dizaines de milliers d'individus vautrés sur le sable . Impressionnant !

Si l'on remonte de Swakopmund vers Spitzkoppe ou Uis (ou l'inverse), cela vaut vraiment le coup de faire un AR de quelques dizaines de kilomètres (piste salée OK) pour aller voir cette exceptionnelle colonie d'otaries. Un "ponton" permet de traverser celle-ci et d'être tout à côté d'elles. Odeur effectivement un peu forte mais tout à fait supportable. Photos exceptionnelles garanties, quel que soit le temps vu la proximité des animaux. Immanquable en Namibie pour qui aime les animaux.
