A small town halfway between the coast and the capital, Karibibib owes its glory to the first railway between Windhoek and Swakopmund, which made it an obligatory night stop for travellers, the train only running during the day. The city developed from 1900 around the six hotels that accommodated travellers. Today, Karibib is more famous for the exploitation of its subsoil. The town is a convenient stopover: a shop adjacent to the Henkert information and handicraft centre serves some drinks and light meals. Two petrol stations, two banks, a bakery, a few mini-markets..
