In the Otjiherero language, the language of the Herero people, Erindi means "the place of water". Located southeast of the small town of Omaruru, the story of this private nature reserve began in 1992, when the Joubert brothers decided to buy 3,000 ha of land to raise cattle. This activity being quite expensive, the Joubert brothers started to reintroduce about 50 giraffes. The experiment was a success and led, a few years later, to the reintroduction of other species from the Etosha National Park, such as blue wildebeest, but also elephants. Gradually, they bought several neighboring farms, their fences were dismantled, to form the current second largest private nature reserve in Namibia, covering nearly 71,000 ha of mountainous bush and savannah, after that of NamibRand, 80 km south of Sesriem (180 000 ha). In this sumptuous setting, one can stay at the Old Traders Lodge. Erindi has also been able to play the local card by attracting many Namibian visitors during school vacations, or simply on weekends (we are 180 km from Windhoek and 2h30 by road). The strong point of this lodge is undoubtedly its huge waterhole, in front of the restaurant, where hippos, elephants, crocodiles, lions, and many antelopes peacefully meet to drink. Only visitors spending at least one night in the reserve can access it.
