Located in the middle of a desert landscape, not far from the town of Mariental, this artificial lake has a surface area of more than 25 km². The whole reserve, and in particular its numerous creeks, is home to more than 260 species of birds including 800 pelicans (the white pelican is the most represented bird), vociferous eagles, pink flamingos, spoonbills, Goliath herons, cormorants... In the southern part, the arid vegetation shelters kudus, oryx, antelopes, mountain zebras, elands, ostriches and black rhinoceros. The park offers activities on the lake: water sports or fishing and, around the lake, 9 km or 15 km walks.
