Founded in 1898 as a trading post during German colonization, Stampriet was the scene of many battles between German troops and the Nama. The village is located about 50 km northeast of Mariental in the Hardap region, at an altitude of 1,200 m, in a barren area on the upper reaches of the Auob River. Both humans and animals depend on drilling to access water and survive in this desert area. Some have even taken up farming and serve local produce to many Namibian supermarkets. The village is known for its freshwater springs (artesian water) and beautiful palm trees
