The Abu Farès mosque is better known as Djamaâ Lihoud, "Mosque of the Jews", because it is in fact the former Great Synagogue of Algiers converted into a mosque in 1962.
Built in 1865 on the former place of the Grand Rabbi Bloch, in the heart of what was the Jewish quarter, it remained for nearly a hundred years a place of worship of the Jewish community of Algiers. Later, it was given a minaret and became the Abu Farès Mosque in 1962.
