Built in 1534 by the renegade Safir Ben Abdallah, Djamaâ Es-Safir is the oldest mosque of the Ottoman era. Nine months were necessary for its construction. It is located inside the Kasbah of Algiers, this inescapable district of the medina registered with the world heritage of UNESCO. The mosque was restored in 1791 under Baba Hassan and by the dey Hussein in 1827. Its octagonal minaret is emblematic of the religious buildings of Ottoman type.
