The great mosque of Algiers is one of the oldest of the city. Built in the 11th century by the founder of Tlemcen, it is dedicated to the Malekite rite and is one of the rare Almoravid legacies.
Heavily altered over the centuries, it has lost its original appearance while maintaining a certain architectural sobriety. The minaret was added by the Zianid sultan of Tlemcen in 1324.
The prayer room consists of eleven bays that make up 72 pillars supporting arches in ogive.Advertising
