PARC DES BASTIONS
Built on the former bastion when Geneva was dismantling its fortifications, this park has become one of the city's most popular green spaces. It was here that the first botanical garden was established in 1817 by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle, and some 50 trees of rare and varied species remain, making this park rich in century-old trees. A 6.5-hectare oasis of greenery right in the center of town, it's a must for all kinds of activities. Genevans, Plainpalais residents, students and professionals from the surrounding area come here to recharge their batteries, take a breath of fresh air and picnic on the deckchairs provided free of charge in summer. There's also the unmissable rendezvous of the regulars, who get together to play their game of chess on the giant checkerboards located near the Place Neuve. It's a children's paradise, with swings and a sandpit, and a historic passageway for marathon runners during the Escalade race in December. Above all, it's home to a landmark of Protestant Geneva, with the Reformers' Wall against the old city walls. Nearby, the Palais Eynard (1817) houses Geneva's municipal services. The Université des Bastions (1873) invites scholars and students to consult the works of Switzerland's largest library. The music festival sets up its many stages here. Strollers can stop off at the bandstand for a drink.
