When the Sardinian city installed a hydraulic machine and laid its first lead pipes, J.D. Blavignac designed a number of monumental, whimsical fountains dating from 1867-1868. They were used to supply the people of Carouge with water. They can be seen in Place du Marché (the most monumental is dedicated to the Arve River), Place du Temple (known for its dragon chimeras), Rue Ancienne (a basin adorned with two bronze swans) and Rue Jacques-Dalphin. Blavignac's fountains bear his trademark, a snail.
