MONUMENT BRUNSWICK (BRUNSWICK MONUMENT)
Located in the Jardin des Alpes, this neo-Gothic mausoleum is dedicated to Charles II d'Este-Guelph, Duke of Brunswick (1804-1873). This wealthy patron of the arts bequeathed his fortune to the city of Geneva in 1873, on condition that a monument be erected in his memory. This unusual monument is made of Carrara marble and Verona stone. Although Geneva was not accustomed to ostentatious funerals, the Duke's generosity prompted the city to accept. Numerous major urban projects were financed, such as the construction of the Grand-Théâtre and the widening of streets.
