Guéckédou is a crossroads town in the forest region. Its proximity to the Liberian and Sierra Leonean borders makes it a strategic area for regional and transnational trade. This is an asset for the development of the city, but it was a disaster in 2000 when mercenaries came to loot and ransack the city. It took several weeks for the army to force them to turn back. The city still bears some of the scars of this war, but above all it is struggling to recover from this troubled period. The health crisis from 2013 to 2015 has further complicated the situation. The level of poverty here remains very high.
