MOUNT OF THE THREE CROSSES (GORA TRZECH KRZYZY)

Museums
5/5
1 review

Above the castle, a small mountain continues its ascent to the sky. As a reward, it has been planted with three crosses in honor of the population of Kazimierz Dolny, decimated by the plague in 1708. This is the highest point in the city, and from here the view that stretches across the Polish countryside and the small town below is most impressive. A very good spot to watch the sun gently set over the roofs.

JANOWIEC CASTLE

Monuments to visit
4/5
1 review

Built in the sixteenth century in Renaissance style, it was one of the country's largest and finest. Swedish invasions and twentieth century wars severely damaged it. Today there are only a few rooms and a beautiful eighteenth century manor house. Exhibitions are organized around the history of the castle, its various owners and the life of the time. There are many objects in everyday life. The panorama on Vistule and the small village is magnificent from the small butte on which the site is located.

CLOISTER OF THE REFORMED

Museums

This monastery dates from the 17th century. It is accessed by a covered staircase dating from 1699. One can enter the courtyard and ask to see the well, which is located in a second courtyard further in the compound. During World War II, the building was requisitioned as the headquarters of the Gestapo, and the Nazis used the headstones of the Jewish cemetery as partitions between the prison cells they created in the basement of the monastery. Since then, the monks have been trying to consecrate the place again in peace.

MONUMENT TO THE MEMORY OF THE JEWS

Memorial to visit

The Jewish community was quite important in the town. It had a synagogue and contributed to the dynamism of this rural town. Unfortunately, the Nazi barbarism reserved it a fate as fatal as the neighboring towns. Of these centuries of cohabitation, there is not much left, not even a cemetery, dismantled by the occupier. The monument that bears the name "Wailing Wall" stands on the site of this former burial ground.

It is closed outside offices, which are held twice a day at 9 a. m. and 6 p. m. The church was completely restored in the 2010 s.

RYNEK

Street square and neighborhood to visit

In the center of the old town, this trapezoidal square is surrounded by beautiful Renaissance-style facades. Among the most beautiful houses are those of the Przybyla brothers, located next to each other at numbers 1 and 2. In the direction of the parish church, there is a bronze statue of a small sitting dog. Legend has it that if you stroke its nose while making a wish, it will come true. This statue represents the dog that came every day from Janowiec, on the other bank of the Vistula River, which it swam across, to be stroked.
