Krakow's Christmas are famous throughout the country and are part of UNESCO's cultural heritage.
Krakow's famous Christmas szopki (nativity scenes) are part of Unesco's cultural heritage. Every year, on the first Thursday in December, they take center stage in the city's Christmas crib competition. Participants of all ages come to present their creations, in the hope of winning first prize. These real little works of art, made of aluminum and cardboard, look more like miniature castles than our traditional nativity scenes. The winner will see his or her creation displayed in the permanent collection of Krakow's National Museum (organizer of the competition), while the most beautiful creations will be presented in the city center, under Plexiglas windows.
For the record, Krakow's National Museum has 170 nativity scenes, presented in a dedicated exhibition. They were also exhibited at the European Parliament, when they were added to the Unesco World Heritage List.
