Cayos Cochinos are small islets that are not part of the three islands of the Bay. They are located between La Ceiba and Roatan, usually taking a boat from Sambo Creek (also possible from Roatan). Beautiful wild and tropical islands, declared maritime reserve in 1994. A few Garifuna fishermen live permanently on the island of Chachahuate, but travellers usually travel there on a day of excursion. Here again, consult the operators of La Ceiba to guide you to these two main islands (surrounded by 13 small cayos), considered by some as the most beautiful of the Caribbean coast of Honduras. A community tourism initiative proposes to stay on site. Beautiful white sand beaches, much more beautiful than on the other islands of the Bay. Cochino Menor (the smallest of the two inhabited islands) houses a scientific mission from the Smithsonian Institute (research on marine life).
