In the east of Roatán, facing the coast of Trujillo, Guanaja is the most beautiful and authentic island in Honduras. It inevitably evokes Roatán, thirty years ago. Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1502 during his fourth trip to the Americas, the island was inhabited by the natives Payas, who sailed, said Columbus, to 25 in small canoes! Hurricane Mitch, in 1998, killed most of the pines that are now the subject of a reforestation policy. This small, unknown paradise in the Caribbean is now inhabited by about 10 000 people, especially in Bonacca (nicknamed «The Cay», an unusual village connected by overhauling wood pontoons), on a ground to the south of the main island of Guanaja, to escape the jejenes mosquitoes that abound there. No cars (two or three service vehicles). Travellers must know that it is possible to spend relatively little money; more than in Utila, of course, but you will not regret the trip.
