Located at 1 980 m above sea level, La Esperanza is the capital of the Intibucá department in the heart of the Lenca region. The city was established in 1848 on an indigenous settlement site called Eramaní (or «pottery country»). His current name would come from the hope never discouraged from a pregnant native of the cousin of a priest who came to convert the Lencas, and remote by him after he knew the facts…The city has a fresh climate that radically changes the humid heat of the Caribbean coast and allows plant cultivation (especially in the Azuacualpa valley). The lencas traditions are particularly rooted. The market is colorful and interesting. Some colonial streets give a certain stamp to the centre, and it is pleasant to spend a couple of hours there.By visiting the villages around La Esperanza, it is possible to buy handicraft or lencas textiles, for example in Cocoa (textile cooperative manufacturer, shawls, etc.) or around the lagoon of Chiligatoro (flower cooperative, possibility of swimming or fishing). These two centres are located on the Río Grande Road.
