Hidden between rivers and mountains, El Mozote is unfortunately famous for the massacre of the village population in December 1981 during the civil war by the Cuzcatlan battalion (government force). 500 people died during this massacre, which was not the only one in the country, but which has the particularity of primarily having targeted children. After this massacre, the surviving inhabitants were mobilized by the army of El Salvador on coastal areas to work on cotton farms. In 2002, President Mauricio Funes called forgiveness on behalf of the State to the families of the victims, and measures were taken to rehabilitate El Mozote as «Cultural bien», implying a duty of memory with the commemorative statues and plaques installed in the village.
