As in the rest of the country, altars of flowers, plants and candles are erected in honour of the Virgin Mary. Children sing on the street, they distribute caramels or oranges. Every quarter of the city orne flowers and plants on which religious scenes are represented. The Virgin is known here as Conchita, a Franciscan statue removed from the waters of Cocibolca Lake by a woman in 1721. This icon couldn't preserve Granada from William Walker's destructive rage in 1855; on the other hand, it extirpa by the miracle of the burning cathedral! Its prestige is considerable.
