Bus and songthaeo for the 4,000 islands, Champassak, Tad Lo, Paksong, the Boloven Plateau, Attapeu; local buses to Vientiane and also international buses to Vietnam. Arrive in the morning, between 7 and 9 am if you don't have your ticket. Possibility to book it in the city at an agency or at your hotel (for a fee, including the trip to the bus station). There is a market and a post office at the bus station.
