The Dukes of Bavaria Collection takes us on a journey through more than 5,000 years of ancient Egyptian history.
This Egyptian museum owes its treasures to two men: Duke Albert V of Bavaria in the 16th century and, 300 years later, King Ludwig I of Bavaria. Both succeeded in accumulating and, above all, preserving these works, all of which are at least 3,000 years old! Explore Munich's Egyptian Museum, which covers 5,000 years of Egyptian art and culture: the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms, as well as the Hellenistic, Roman and Coptic periods. It is one of the few museums outside Egypt devoted exclusively to ancient Egyptian artefacts.
Opened in 2013, the museum's exhibition space is completely underground. From the outside, the entrance is reminiscent of the monumental doors of Egyptian temples, but in a contemporary version, stripped of all ornamentation. Visitors descend most of the steps and enter the halls to reach the rooms flooded with natural light thanks to the atrium. The halls alternate with smaller, more intimate rooms. Cut-outs in the walls contain exceptional exhibits, such as the statue of Antinous or the great obelisk. Special mention must be made of the touch screens, which allow visitors to explore 5,000 years of history in a fun, interactive way. Its location in the heart of Munich's Kunstareal gives this Egyptian museum the space and status it deserves as an integral part of world art history.
