The neo-baroque and neo-Renaissance Munich courthouse is famous for being the site of the trial of S. and H. Scholl.
The courthouse was built between 1891 and 1898 by architect Friedrich von Thiersch in neo-Baroque style, topped by a central glass dome. In 1943, two of the founding members of Munich's university resistance movement, die Weisse Rose (the White Rose), Hans and Sophie Scholl, were tried here. They were in the crosshairs of the National Socialist Party, which tolerated no opposition. At the end of the trial, both were sentenced to death as an example to others.
