150 km north of Pemba, this small island of 35 ha has never been inhabited. It is a true haven of peace. Moreover, this is where its name comes from, which can also be written Quilaluia. In the 16th century, Arab and Portuguese sailors often stopped here to rest, and the name came quickly from the Swahili lala which means sleep. Here, there is only one hotel-lodge. As there is no water point, everything is obtained by desalination, a process done naturally with mangrove roots. We understand why it has always remained virgin! The place is totally spared malaria.
