Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives, now Saint-Pierre-en-Auge, is home to an Eden: its Conservatory Garden. Founded in 1995 and designed as a museum garden, it presents more than 450 species and varieties of flowers and vegetables traditionally grown in the Auge region.
Through the tour entitled "Women’s gardens in the Pays d’Auge", you can follow in the footsteps of the women who were busy picking, preserving, and preparing the plants. Some to care for their men and their animals, others to decorate the church. We are astonished by the "blue potato" and "the little square of Caen", we marvel at the "soap grass", "the lily of the valley" and "the argentine", the secret of which was passed down from mother to daughter. Renowned for its active medicinal properties, "L’argentine" was, in particular, effective in the case of excessive menstruation and kidney stones. One would put some seeds and plants in its pockets. An extraordinary garden where the public can discover a preserved heritage, be entrusted with little secrets and recipes of grandmothers, and find the gestures of our so close ancestors. Everyone is invited to take part in this preservation: any collector of varieties that have almost disappeared or cannot be found (such as the "Sucrin de Honfleur" melon, the "Noire des Montagnes", "Suie" and "Piquet" potatoes, the "Puce" pea, the "Rond" parsnip, etc.) is welcome to collect and preserve these vagabonds.
