While Vinagre was long home to a fountain that flowed pleasant-tasting alkaline fluoride water, the village, which lies around 4 km south-west of Nova Sintra, is now abandoned. One house after another has been abandoned, following the drying up in the 1980s of the famous spring that used to irrigate the local terraced crops. If you hike to Vinagre from Nova Sintra, you may find yourself alone in the world. The area offers a sense of tranquillity with its gentle rolling hills. The view over the island of Fogo, sometimes clear, sometimes lost in mist, is nevertheless very pretty.
