Stay : Hiking to the Cova Crater

The crater of Cova is recommended as a first hike. It is necessary to take it in the direction of the descent, the rise is arduous. You can do it either from your accommodation or when you arrive in Porto Novo, by taking the ferry. After your drop off, you have to go around the crater by the left, until a gap in the north. We will come down from the crater in a magnificent landscape.

Detail of the stay : Hiking to the Cova Crater - 3 days

  • Ponta Do Sol
  • Ponta Do Sol
  • Ribeira Grande

Day 1: La Boca de Ambas

Steps: Ponta Do Sol

Ponta do Sol

- Boca de Ambas - Cruzinha da Garça (4 to 5 hours walk, 500 m ascent, 750 m difference in altitude). Transfer, from your accommodation in "alluguer", to Boca de Ambas. At the entrance of Boca de Ambas, on your right, we start our hike by a paved path, which will lead you to the ridges to pass the Selada de Mocho pass before going down to the Ribeira da Garça. You will have a superb view of the village of Cha da Igreja and its white church, if you have any strength left, make the detour before continuing your descent towards the ocean and the small fishing port of Cruzinha da Garça. Night and dinner in Sona Fish at Isualina (tel. + 238 226 1027 - [email protected])

Day 2: Beautiful hike between sea and cliffs

Steps: Ponta Do Sol

Cruzinha da Garça - Fontainhas - Ponta do sol (4 to 5 hours walk, ascent and descent 500 m). The next day, probably. This hike is one of the most beautiful that I have ever done, a very beautiful route between sea and cliffs, discovering hamlets at the end of the world. We will alternate ascents and descents on a balcony path until Ponta do Sol, crossing Fontainhas, without any doubt the most beautiful village of the island. A last pass and here we are, overlooking the small, obsolete and practically unused airport of Ponta do Sol.

Day 3: Small unusual hike

Steps: Ribeira Grande

Corda - Poço da Corda - Ribeira de Duque. (3-4 hours of walking, difference in altitude 900 m). This is a somewhat unusual hike that can fill a good half day. Take the main road to Corda. From there, turn left at the school and take the superb path that goes down to Coucouli. After 20 minutes to half an hour of walking, at the altitude of 750 meters, on the crest line between two elegant peaks you will see on your right while descending, the very remarkable circus "Poço da Corda". You will take the path below that leads to the ruins, taking care to follow the tracks left by man for decades; the peaks can be vertiginous and the grassy slopes particularly slippery in rainy weather. Go around the cirque, to descend, right bank towards the bottom of this very narrow canyon, but already dominated and mastered by man. You will cross micro-farms of yam, banana, papaya, coffee... Although widening as you go down, the canyon will narrow again (around 350 meters of altitude), at the level of a mini dam; there, I advise you not to follow the obvious path which leaves on the left in the banana plantation, but rather to take on the right the irrigation ditch At the height of Meio de Questin, the canyon widens completely to join the paved road that will lead you to Ribeira da Grande.

In the central area of Chã da Pedras, many day or half-day hikes are possible and always very attractive, considering the volcanic configuration of the island with always strong declivities. I propose you a rather long one below with a great diversity of landscapes.
