THE COMMANDERY OF THE TEMPLARS OF COURTVAL
A historic commandery consisting of a chapel and manor house, now a private farm and open to the public.
If the city owes its name to a Gallo-Roman origin, the commandery has a history that goes back to the 12th century. Consisting of a 12th and 13th century chapel and the 15th century commander's manor, the commandery was bequeathed by the baron of Vassy with the rest of the domain in 1140 to the Temple order. In 1312, the dissolution of the Temple was ordered. The commandery was then given to the Knights Hospitallers of Saint-Jean-de-Malte. During the Revolution, it was sold as a national asset and became a farm. After having been privately owned for a while, it has changed owners and will soon be open to the public again! A medieval farm is in preparation, to be continued!
