FORMER SYNAGOGUE (EHEMALIGE SYNAGOGE)
Former Ashkenazi synagogue in Jugendstil style, home to a cultural center and Austria's Institute of Jewish History.
This Ashkenazi synagogue, built in 1912-13 in the Jugendstil style, remained active until 1938, when it was destroyed by the Nazis. As a city of resistance, Sankt Pölten was duty-bound to rebuild its synagogue. This it did in 1980, with the help of the state. The building now houses a cultural center and the Institute for Jewish History in Austria, dedicated to research into the community from the Middle Ages to the present day. Rich cultural program: exhibitions, concerts, etc.
