The building has been beautifully renovated. Built in 1872 to designs by Theophil Hansen, the building houses Vienna's state-run School of Fine Arts and an extensive museum with ten rooms, featuring the collections bequeathed by Count Anton Lamberg, including a painting by Hieronymus Bosch, drawings by Rubens and Dutch landscapes, and a later donation by Prince John II of Liechtenstein of some sixty Italian paintings. As you enter the building, you'll admire the fantastic ceiling of the Aula - the great hallway - and the frescoes by Feuerbach.
The Museum of the Academy of Fine Arts presents European painting from the 15th to the 18th century and international painting from the 19th to the early 20th century. The Old Masters gallery is renowned for its works by Rubens and Van Dyck. The museum's masterpieces include Hieronymus Bosch's Last Judgment triptych, Murillo's Two Boys Playing Dice and Guardi's Views of Venice. Also noteworthy are the paintings by Ferdinand George Waldmüller, with their naturalistic and romantic scenes of everyday life in Vienna and the surrounding countryside. Each year, high-quality temporary exhibitions complement the permanent displays. The new museography enhances the collections and temporary exhibitions of this historic museum. Temporary exhibitions in 2024-25 include a tribute to Cranach.
