This is the former Nordbahnhof or northern railway station. From here you can reach the Czech Republic. This imposing station dates from 1838 and was essential for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was badly damaged during the Cold War. It was relegated to the status of a regional railway station, next to the former Iron Curtain. Modernized in 2006, at the gates of the Prater, it has become a major station again and is served, like the Wien Mitte station, by the train from the airport.
