A semi-circular depression bordered by a curve of vertical cliffs at Asbyrgi

The Ásbyrgi Canyon is a semi-circular depression bordered by 3.5 km of vertical cliffs 100 m high (and 1 km wide). In this cirque, there is a real green oasis and the clear lake of Botnstjörn.

The trail from Dettifoss runs along the eastern edge of the outer cliff, then descends into the depression through a roped-off passage and reaches the campsite. From there, an unmarked path climbs up the inner cliff. From the shop there is a network of marked trails to Áshöfdi and Ástjörn Lake.
