The depth of Lake Mývatn is shallow, no more than 4.50 m. The lake is made up of two basins linked by a narrow channel: Syðriflói, the larger, to the south, and Ytriflói, to the north. Mývatn means "lake of the midges" and, when there's no wind, you're surrounded by swarms of these nasty, fortunately non-stinging beasts. Although many tourists don't linger here, this lake and its many sites of interest are well worth a two-day stopover to enjoy them to the full. The site is particularly beautiful in fine weather.

Des milliers d'oiseaux viennent la se reproduire donc pas mal de chemins sont fermés pendant la periode de nidification.
Ne pas oublier de prendre ses jumelles.
Par contre selon la saison et les vents, des nuages de moucherons sont en suspension dans l'air, par moment on dirait presque du brouillard.
Pour certains, un chapeau avec moustiquaire s'impose.
