THE SUDURNES SCIENCE AND LEARNING CENTER
The Sudurnes Science and Learning Centre is a research center located in Sandgerði. Its main focus is on natural sciences and related subjects. The center comprises the Nature Research Institute of Southwest Iceland and the Research Center of the University of Iceland at Sudurnes. The Nature Research Institute of Southwest Iceland collects and stores information and data on nature in the Sudurnes region, with a focus on ecological research and teaching. The Research Center of the University of Iceland in Sudurnes focuses on research and teaching using clean water, wild organisms and the prevention and treatment of diseases in aquaculture or in nature. The center is also a partner in the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark, a unified geographical area where sites and landscapes of international geological importance are managed for protection, education and sustainable development. The center is also part of the INTERACT network, which aims to strengthen research and monitoring capacity in the European Arctic and beyond.
