MONTE EPOMEO

This dormant volcano (its last eruption dates back to 1302) is almost in the centre of the island and rises to 789 m. To reach the summit, start from the small village of Fontana, the highest in Ischia, accessible by bus (lines CS and CD). The terrain, almost entirely made up of volcanic rock, bears witness to the eventful history of Ischia's subsoil and explains the presence of numerous thermal springs. The ascent (about 1 hour) is quite demanding, but at the top you are rewarded by the vast panorama of the island, the coastline and the Gulf of Naples.
