Not far from Tula is the picturesque Leo Tolstoy Museum and Estate, literally a "bright glade", with a huge park with gardens and ponds and his house. The great writer spent 60 years of his life here. The museum has preserved the interior, including his library containing 22,000 volumes in 35 languages and the leather sofa on which he was born. It was here that he wrote War and Peace and Anna Karenina. You can visit his grave, which, according to his wishes, has no cross or inscription.
